Short biography Rainer Kaltofen obtained his Diploma in Semiconductor Physics and Radio Engineering at the Dresden University of Technology and the Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany, in 1971. Until 1973 he worked as a researcher in the microelectronic industry before he became assistant researcher at the Dresden University of Technology in 1974 doing research in the field of electrochemistry. In 1977 he joined the Academy Institute in Dresden, Germany, which was the predecessor institute of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden), Germany. Even though he has retired by now he continued working at the IFW Dresden in 2010 and in 2013 joined the ERC group of Denys Makarov who was awarded an ERC Starting Grant.
